Specialisms and Skills
A lifetime as a professional engineer has given me a broad range of skills and experience, much of it gained in the project based environment. I used to provide specialist engineering advice and consultancy in the following key areas:
Technical
- Analogue electronics
- Developing an Arduino based control system for a stair climbing wheelchair
- Digital low level RF system designs based on the LBNL/Dimtel LLRF4 board
- High power RF amplifiers (5 kW to 1.5 MW, 25 MHz to 500 MHz)
- RF cavity design (including structural, fabrication and heat flow issues)
- Synchrotron, linear accelerator and Tokamak physics
- Discrete logic and FPGA design using VHDL
- Design for EMC and CE qualification
- Large super-conducting magnet power supplies and quench detection
- Use of engineering software tools including Mathcad, Maple, Autocad, Orcad and Altium
- Interfacing systems to the EPICS distributed control system
- Use of CST for electromagnetic finite element analysis and optimisation
- Cryogenic instrumentation
Management and Commercial
- System specification and preparation of technical specifications for Calls for Tender
- Planning and delivering in-house and customer training
- Staff selection, motivation, appraisal and development
